Authors should write with heart and guts, and worry more about the sense of the story they tell than the correct placement of punctuation.

 

But after their words spill gloriously, tumble cleverly, create a world of feeling from type, they need the paragraphs, punctuation, grammar and white space to make sure every word is polished to shine, and every reader has the best chance to appreciate the sweat.

 

Sometimes it’s hard to see how to do that. Sometimes you need second sight.
